Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology at NYU Langone Health is a world-class multidisciplinary research center focused on advancing the field of stem cell biology to improve clinical outcomes. The study of stem cells is creating a revolution in medicine. Unlike other types of cells, stem cells are unspecialized cells that renew themselves over long periods of time through cell division. Under certain physiological or experimental conditions, they can be induced to differentiate or divide into cells with special functions, such as the beating cells of the heart or the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Stem cells may therefore serve a vital role in the treatment of many diseases. Our scientists promote collaborative interdepartmental studies that explore a variety of stem cell species and types. Our breakthrough findings have already had a significant impact on biomedical research, and our goal is to continue to transform healthcare through pioneering research.
